Defoe on his way to Spurs

The Daily Mail, that most reliable London-based newspaper, reports that Portsmouth last night agreed to sell Jermain Defoe to Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of just under £15 million.

The England striker moved from White Hart Lane to Fratton Park only a year ago, having become frustrated at being stuck behind Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov in the pecking order.

But neither the Irishman nor the Bulgarian are now among the Lilywhites, having moved to Liverpool and Manchester United respectively for a combined sum of £50 million last summer.

And so Defoe is eager to return to North London and reunite with Harry Redknapp, the man who unearthed him at West Ham United 10 years ago before bringing him to Pompey.

The South Coast club paid around £7.5 million for the Beckton-born goal-sneak, meaning they are set to make a very welcome profit if the deal goes through as expected.

In addition, Spurs have supposedly agreed to waive the outstanding amount owed for Younes Kaboul, the French defender who also moved to Portsmouth last January.
